Wooden spindles
Wood remains as fashionable as ever and is suitable for both modern and classic style staircases. It’s not only versatile and durable, but it’s also easy to manipulate, meaning you can achieve a multitude of interesting looks. You can treat the wood – be it staining, varnishing or painting - or you can maintain the eye-catching, natural look that has been so popular throughout the history of home renovations.
Once you’ve made your mind up that wood is the solution for you, your next choice is the type of timber and style of spindle. Our range of wooden stair spindles are available in many high-quality timbers, each bringing their own unique qualities (click to visit the range):
- Pine is the most common timber used to manufacture spindles – it’s cost effective, easy to work with, and ideal for painting, staining or varnishing.
- White Primed spindles are typically either birch or poplar timber, which are free of knots and are sprayed white pre-sale to a high standard.
- Hemlock is a softwood timber similar in appearance to pine, although is stronger than many hardwoods and can be treated without issue, though equally looks great untreated.
- White Oak is a hardwood with a few knots and a lovely pale brown appearance - again ideal for treatment, particularly for waxing or varnishing.
- Ash is a straight grained hardwood, predominantly light brown in colour though it often has a slight tint of red. Again, it can be easily stained and polished for a high-quality finish.
- Dark Hardwood is a darker brown with a tint of red and is often an ideal replacement for mahogany spindles.
We also offer a range of different styles to give your staircase that extra appeal (click to visit the range). These include:
- Plain square spindles – often the popular choice in neutral surroundings, these square solutions are simple and inexpensive.
- Plain turned spindles – featuring beautifully designed centre sections to add a real traditional style to staircases
- Barley Twist spindles and Square Twist spindles – a visually interesting style which feature elegant quarter or double middle twist sections
- Fluted spindles – a more traditional yet charismatic spindle with a fluted design
- Stop chamfered spindles – featuring a small chamfer in the middle for a slimmer, softer style
- Provincial spindles – featuring a turned middle among the clean lines of a more traditional spindle
- Colonial spindles – another simple and delicate design suitable for more traditional staircases
