How to care for your glass staircase
Glass staircases are beautiful and ideal for modern interiors. They can create the illusion of more space in your rooms, allowing light to shine through and create a perfect atmosphere for your spaces. But how easy are they to maintain? Check out our top tips.
Protect it
The phrase goes that ‘prevention is cheaper than the cure’. One of the first things you should consider is how to protect your glass staircase from being damaged or looking dirty. You can treat the surface with a protective coating like a wax, which will mean you won’t have to clean it as regularly and when you do clean it, you’ll be able to do it quicker and easier.
Clean it
No-one likes to have smudges and smears on their shiny, striking staircase so it’s important you use the right products to keep everything clean. Most high street stores will stock reputable cleaning products for you to use, but make sure you apply it with a lint-free cloth. You’ll be able to wipe down in no time at all, making your centrepiece look brand new over and over again. If your staircase incorporates other materials as well as glass, make sure the solution used is right for each particular surface and beware of dripping onto other parts.
Remember it’s there
You’ll love your glass staircase forever, but it’s important to remember it’s there and what it’s made from. Our glass stair parts are safe and strong – but it’s still glass. So, when you’re taking bulky items up the stairs, carrying things with sharp edges or even playing with the kids, just remember it is susceptible to damage. Any broken, shattered or badly cracked panes will have to be replaced.
Buff it up
Glass is a fabulous material, but sometimes it can get scratched. Just in the same way wood can be chipped. Busy households and people going up and down the stairs every day means accidents could happen. But even if the worst happens, don’t worry. You’ll be able to polish up the glass and restore it like new. Again, there are loads of cleaning products available, but everyday items like toothpaste could do the job too. Just clean up the area, rub in the solution and buff the area for around 30-40 seconds.
Give it a once over
Finally, simply try to keep a watching eye over your glass staircase just like you would with any other material. Give it a staircase MOT once a year or so to check all the fixings are working well and holding up. Everything should be fine, but it’s best to check things out.
