Complementing your staircase with a stunning hallway
Complementing your staircase with a stunning hallway - Stair Parts Online
Hallways help you and your visitors flow into your home – they are the well-trodden pathways into your kitchens, lounges and, of course, all-important stairways.
Other than the bricks and mortar on the outside, hallways will give the first impression of your home so it’s important to treat them like you would any other room. Here we look at some modern hallway ideas and hallway designs to help you make the most out of this key area in your household.
What’s under your feet?
Hard or soft? Tiles or carpet? Wood or a rug? Whatever the style of your home, you’ll be wanting to get this choice right. Older buildings like converted barns might look, and feel, better with a hard flooring, perhaps using rugged old stonework. While newer homes might feel more spacious and modern with a lush carpet underfoot. And you don’t necessarily have to match it up to your staircase – a stark contrast between the two can help bring your stairs to life.
Choosing the right colour scheme
In many homes, hallways are typically dark places due to the lack of natural light. You’ll not be wanting to have the lights on all the time, so colour experts suggest using brighter colours to enhance the welcoming feeling. Pastel colours will reflect better, giving a real sense of the space available to you.
You can make your hallway seem larger by having a different ceiling colour to your flooring. You could even consider adding chalkboard paint for children to add their own style to the area.
Making the most of the space available
The entrance to any home is typically long and narrow – not ideal for placing lots of furniture. But there are still ways to make it feel like there’s more going on. Slim tables, ottomans or pouffes work well while placing eye-catching items high and low can take away from any perceived narrowness. Mirrors also work to make narrow hallways seem larger than they may be. Using any alcoves for storage and transforming the space underneath your stairs can also work wonders.
Use the walls
Fitted shelves or bookcases can really liven up your hallways, and of course help with storage. But simply hanging a series of photos on your wall – perhaps ones that tell a story of you, your family or something you love – not only might act as a talking point but act as a warm welcome as you enter. Light up, light up
There are lots of lighting options for hallways. High ceilings and wide spaces lend themselves to showcase chandeliers and drooping pendants, while narrow spaces require a subtler touch with built-in spotlights or strip lighting. Make sure your lighting makes an impact, shining on your statement staircase.
